Stress stands no chance when you ballroom dance!
Let’s face facts, as wonderful as life can be, it is often littered with mind flooding, worry inducing challenges that can make you feel mentally and physically unwell. This is called – Stress.

In these periods of time, the brain sends signals to the kidneys to release ‘stress hormones’ like: Adrenaline and Cortisol, which can play havoc with not only your psychological health but physical too. Raising blood pressure, causing dizziness and over time, affecting your emotional body health, making you feel overwhelmed and sad.
However, as much as the human body can facilitate feelings of stress, it can also counteract this physiological response with a positive switch of hormones which come flooding to the rescue when you – DANCE!

Yes that’s right, dancing can genuinely counteract stress by triggering the release of your body’s happy hormones. In short, dancing is your ideal defence and awesome attack on the effects of stress. This is because when you dance your very own terrific troop of happy hormones come dancing to your rescue.
- Dopamine. Also known as the “feel-good” hormone, is a hormone and neurotransmitter that’s an important part of your brain’s reward system. Dopamine is associated with pleasurable sensations, along with learning, memory, motor system function, and more. This is released when you learn ballroom dancing sequences and steps and like magic, your learning to dance has supported your improved physical state!
- Serotonin. Acting as a hormone and a neurotransmitter, Serotonin helps to regulate your mood as well as your sleep, appetite, digestion, learning ability, and memory. Therefore not only is it released when you dance, but it carries on working in your daily life to positively effect your health, keep a healthy weight and experience improved sleep. Amazing, right?!
- Endorphins. These incredible hormones are not only released when you are feeling good but they are working for you even in moments of stress. They are your body’s natural pain reliever, which are produced in response to stress or discomfort. Endorphin levels also tend to increase when you engage in reward-producing activities, like dancing of course.
Therefore, these happy hormones improve not only your immediate state of being, helping you to counteract the negative effects of stress, but they also improve your overall, long term health too. Which is pretty amazing, don’t you think?! So next time you are feeling overwhelmed in life and stress is attempting to take hold, prescribe yourself a dosage of dancing and you will happy hormone flood your body, mind and emotions back to magnificent and abundant good health.
